I wrote this during a particularily productive July a few years back. I had a run of those hot nights where I kept waking with ideas.

Aesop Rock has forearm tattoos that say MUST NOT SLEEP/MUST WARN OTHERS (a quote from the 1956 Invasion of the Body Snatchers, and it pops up on his album Float).

I have often thought of getting similar tattoos that say WRITE DOWN/ EVERYTHING, as it’s something I had to train myself to do. Once I did, life got a lot easier both as an artist and as a human. I think I always have an itchy soul. Curiosity and discovery are crucial for me, especially as an artist. People talk a lot about play being essential to their process and I concur. Those weird sketches and poems on a napkin are often made of gold.
