I spent the weekend with Ashley and family near Douglas, Wyoming. We were there for a volleyball tournament with a few hours here and there to explore the area. We checked out some local attractions including a nearby park featuring a natural rock bridge over the Platte River, a large western museum, and a railcar museum with a vintage dining car, passenger car, and caboose, and had a great birthday dinner of chicken korma and crispy duck wings (and I’m told some excellent mini corndogs and fries as we were still in the high plains).

The park was beautiful (and quite easy to navigate, no matter what the sign says).
The train cars we saw made us long to have use of widespread passenger trains like these again, like the ones my dad used to take from Alliance to Lincoln for college in the 1950s and 60s, like so many cool things from America’s past.
The other museum contained remnants from “the west,” including a saloon with a derpy deer and apparently the cure for the American condition.

The conference center/casino/bar/Indian restaurant we visited featured a great bullriding jackalope painted window. Featured in sculpture, on t-shirts and stickers, and just about everywhere else you could put one, the jackalope is the favorite son of Douglas.
Though we all agreed it should be their school mascot, Douglas chose the more aggressive (and much less fun) “bearcat.” The carpets at the conference center were, however, aggressively fun and the pool was housed in a wonderful space with high vaulted ceilings.

Until next time… stay safe out there.
