I wrote a long post about AI and my feelings about it, and it was fine and I’ll probably post it soon, but I thought tonight, I’d talk anout my day job a little bit. I am a florist and greenhouse owner and operator, along with my 87 year old father and one of my wonderfully talented daughters (I have a wonderfully talented son too). We go through our struggles, like any small business, but it is so rewarding to get to do creative work and help people through all the stages of life (birth, school, work, love, possibly parenthood, death as the song goes (apologies to The Godfathers) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5SCXzpqTP90

I prefer to work more sculpturally and in a simpler, Japanese and German inspired style, often minimal, not sparse, just more naturalistic, with simple, lovely lines, contrasting lines, using a lot of native grasses and flowers, but alas, not as big of a deal in small town Nebraska as one might think. 

One thing that I do love is Autumn (my other, wonderfully talented daughter shares this favorite season’s name) and fall is a time of dried flowers. I had an opportunity to make two dried pieces today for a special occasion. 

An incredible woman I know well has a birthday tomorrow and I have been working on something for her with dried flowers both from our shop and from her garden. These would be more in line with the german naturalist style that I quite like and would like to do more of. Fun fact, the ceramic hat basket is a vintage piece that just came in from an old family friend, it was purchased at our shop back in the 1970s! Inside was something very cool, a glass frog (a florist’s tool- see video). I used a lot of dried roses in these and the textures they develop and maintain as they dry and amazing.
