BEGIN Post One: An Introduction
I’m TIMM (with two MM’s). I’m an artist, florist, writer, and creative consultant. I believe in intellectual curiosity. I believe music truly comes from the soul and is as important to humans as other nourishment. I believe in serious people with serious senses of humor. I do not believe in AI. I believe the cats will save us. I have friends everywhere.
A lifetime ago, I was a freshman in journalism school. I’d seen All the President’s Men several times, I had a tan trench coat, I looked disheveled in my white dress shirt. My veins burned terrible drip coffee. My hair (of precious memory) was a floppy mess (just a few years before the bleached blonde TIMM phase followed by the grown out frosted tips look TIMM). I was going to change the world through the written word. My pen, dear reader, was mightier than their sword.
*I went to college on an art scholarship mostly based on my newly found love of digital manipulation with Photoshop and my Power Mac 6100 (complete with the crazy ergonomic keyboard).
Always choosing my own path and approaching life in the most difficult way possible, 19ish year old Timm got to college and decided to dive fully into journalism instead. I did my art classes and enjoyed them, but journalism was exciting and the technology was ahead of the art studio’s at the time. I was certain that I was going to be a writer by day and a hacker by night (I was heavily influenced by Mondo 2k and the aesthetic of the 90s hacker). This entire scenario would mostly repeat itself in reverse one year later when I flunked a history course and was no longer eligible for journalism school and eventually fell back into my first love: ART.
I traded in my trench coat for my closet full of old grunge layers and while my music interest has changed, ever-evolving through the years (thank you KEXP), I still appreciate a few grungy layers in my wardrobe. I also kept my love of the 90s hacker aesthetic as it shows up in my visual work even today.
Many, many, years later, I would graduate with a double major in Studio Art (sculpture and print-making) and Journalism. Somewhere in there, I owned and ran a coffeehouse for 8 years, made several life-long friends, raised three kids, had a few incredible pets come and go. I lost some wonderful people, worked on some very rewarding projects, wrote and photographed for a newspaper, made thousands of floral arrangements, dozens of casket pieces for funerals, ended a long-term relationship, created a large body of work, showed in a few galleries, got one tattoo, taught some classes, wrote about the 1980s Satanic Panic, was adopted by a tiger tabby cat, and met the love of my life.
I’ve had a falling out with “social” media so I’m going back to my roots. This will be a sort of newsletter of my work, some art, some writing, some thoughts on other people’s art and writing.
The Smoking Crow Reading Room is my home, a sort of amalgamation of some of my favorite coffeehouses, bookshops, cafes, galleries and studios, and record shops, complete with my Rancillio Sylvia and Head Research Librarian Winston (Wolf) the resident tabby cat.
I’m planning on updating this at least once a week. Until next time, stay safe out there friends.
PS: I’m going to end these with some recent photos, floral arrangements, art pieces, a song or two, etc… so here you go:
